UMBC's AIChE excels at ChemE Car and ChemE Jeopardy!

UMBC had two teams compete in Jeopardy and one in ChemE Car at the Mid-Atlantic AIChE Conference (hosted by UMBC). AIChE students were assisted by Dr. Mariajosé Castellanos and Dr. Neha Raikar.

The ChemE Car competition engages college students in designing and constructing a car powered by a chemical energy source that will safely run a specific given distance and then stop.

ChemE Car: Afrah Ahmed, Jacob Craft, Michael Dinan, Dylan Hildt, Danny Miranda, David Ni, Jemma Przybocki, Ben Welling (ChemE Car Captain) and Jonathan Wu won the ChemE Car competition, marking UMBC's first ChemE car win! The target distance this year was 24.8 m, and UMBC was only 1.3 m away from reaching it. The team also placed 3rd in the ChemE Car poster competition.

ChemE Jeopardy is a trivia competition that utilizes questions from Chemical Engineering undergraduate coursework.

Jacob Craft, Joshua Lewis, Dylan Hildt and Jonathan Wu, the newly formed UMBC 2 team, made it to the semifinals and were only 100 points away from the winning team. This is one of our strongest results for a group of four competing together for the first time.

Ethan Banks, Colin Jones (ChemE Jeopardy Chair), Paul Loberg, and Pavan Umashankar were the UMBC 1 team and won the competition, taking first place in this regional meeting.

These two victories have earned UMBC two spots to compete at the AIChE Student National meeting in San Diego in October 2024.
