Hello UMBC Students, The fall semester is just around the corner, and we’re excited to start meeting for Fall shop hours and meetings! What is UMBC Racing? We are a student organization that annually designs, builds, tests, and races off-road buggies against more than 100 schools across the country. Officially, we are the Society of Automotive Engineers club at UMBC focused on the Baja SAE competition, but there is no requirement to be any type of engineer. We train all of the skills needed for the competition! How do I join? Make sure you are compliant to be on campus, then show up to shop hours and the general body meetings (following campus procedures). More details about these events will come out the week before school starts. You don’t have to be any particular major or year of school and there are no applications. What will I be doing there? At the shop: The design of the car happens mostly during the summer, with manufacturing beginning in the fall. Most of the car is manufactured in house, so there are always things to do. At the shop, members will learn how to use a manual mill and lathe, how to do some vehicle maintenance, assembly, and disassembly, and generally help build the 2022 vehicle. At the general body meetings: The general body meetings are where we teach useful Baja-related topics like how different subsystems (like brakes, suspension, etc.) work, or how the competition works. Our general body meetings will begin after Involvement Fest. So what’s next? The week before school begins, look for an email from this mailing list detailing shop hours, any specific processes or tasks to make sure you are good to go, then show up to the shop!
